In this weekly post im gonna show artwork breakdown from my latest work for Rad Abe forthcoming EP cover. Creative process of this artwork almost same as most of my artworks before.
./ Basic Brush Setting
or if you lazy to set it up you can download the used brush below xD
./ Breakdown
First of all, i trace the reference image for the lineart in Adobe Illustrator. After the original traced lineart is done, I sketch it to make a 'final point' for this artwork.
After that, i copied the whole lineart to Manga Studio. I like to use Manga Studio for detailing the line art cause the brush easily to control and give a good pressure than Photoshop (in my laptop experience).
Then i separated the line art right in the middle, and i give 'ripped-off' detail based on my sketch.
After the process in Manga Studio is done, I move back to Photoshop to colorize it. First of all, fill the line art with base color. Im gonna separate the coloring process into 2 part.
./ Inner Skull Add some highlight to the skull part, in this artwork i representated the light come from front of the object.
After the highlight, add some shadow. Imagine the skull is inside the man, so I add shadow in upper and bottom part, also right under the skin. I adjusted the skull color using Level to make it more stronger.
/. Skin
I add some layered base shadow color to the original skin to make it more natural.
To add skin detail, I used brush with brush opacity around 40-60%, brush flow 50%, and brush hardness 100%.
Dont forget to add highlight in forehead, cheek, chin, and maybe in the neck. For the highlight, I used softer brush with brush opacity around 25-30% and brush hardness 75%

After I think enough with the skin detail, I always use this process: adjust the skin color and skin darkness to make it more natural / blend with goal color. I used Hue/Saturation & Level to adjust the skin color.
/. Detail
The next step is detailing. I try to make the skin color more blend by using softer brush and adding the lips color. After that added some detail to the hoodie with lighter color (for the highlight) and darker color (for the shadow).
The next detail is adding some highlight on the hair, face, and hoodie. For the detail highlight I usually use contrast color such as : orange, cyan, magenta, or yellow (depend on the color scheme of the artwork). And I added some line to the ripped hoodie to make it more 'ripped'.
/. Sky
To paint the sky, I usually started with gradient with 2 color. In this artwork I used dark orange and black. After that add some cloud detail by using cloud brushes (you can find this on deviantart). Use 2-3 color with brush opacity 70% and flow 70% for the clouds to make it more realistic.
And the latest part add final detail such as : smoke, particle, or whatever you want ;p
